"This house is clean."

Yes, there's a neverending, ongoing fight between film nerds over whether The Texas Chain Saw Massacre director Tobe Hooper actually directed this film, or whether he blew it and Steven Spielberg had to take over the reigns. It's a controversy that, along with the whisperings of a curse surrounding the film series, has managed to almost overshadow what a fun, funny, and surprisingly emotional suburban scarefest Poltergeist is.

But regardless of who made it, Poltergeist is some potent nightmare fuel, featuring some of the most iconic imagery ever shot in the history of horror cinema. Hungry trees, malevolent clowns, skeleton-filled swimming pools, a particularly rigorous exfoliation routine, Zelda Rubenstein herself, and of course, the simple image of a television, broadcasting snow late at night, beckoning a tiny blond girl to touch the screen - to go into the light.

It's also a pretty smartassed take on the complacency of suburbia, as well as a commentary on haunted house stories in general, providing an amusing answer as to why these people don't just immediately jump in a car and bail out the instant they saw the furniture playing hopscotch in the kitchen.

And so, we drop in once again on JoBeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson as they try to hold their family together in the presence of some rather agitated spirits.
